Care of Your Scissors/Shears

Without a doubt your scissors are one of your most important investments. Taking care of them only makes sense. Here are a few basic rules:

a.   Don’t store them in a bag or box.  The tips can be damaged, nicks can occur as well as other  physical damage.  Use a fabric tool roll, wallet or an acrylic stand in which to store your scissors/shears.

b.   Clean and oil your scissors on a regular basis.  Do not use just any oil. Select one provided by your scissor manufacturer or your sharpening service. They will provide the correct type of oil and a needle-nosed oil bottle that will allow you to put the oil where needed.

c.    After you clean your scissors allow them to dry in a rack or other device which will allow air to circulate and dry the scissors completely before placing them into a storage container.

d.   If your scissors get damaged, have them sharpened immediately or stop using them until they can be sharpened. Too often people use damaged scissors which cause extensive repair work before they are serviceable once again.

When you have missing or worn parts, replace them as soon as possible. Missing bumpers can cause finger cuts.  Improper alignment can cause serious damage to your scissors, cause sore hands, and other work related problems.
